Giving your walls a fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and most effective ways to transform a room - and with the right tools, it can be a truly satisfying experience. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or picking up a roller for the first time, Hemway’s eco-conscious Premium Bamboo Decorating Kits provide everything you need to get the job done with confidence and care. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials of decorating your interior walls, using each component of your Hemway kit like a pro.

Step 1: Prepare Your Space – Protect, Tape, and Plan

Before you even open a paint tin, it’s crucial to prepare your workspace.

Start by opening the Recyclable Dust Sheet (included in the Hemway Premium Bamboo Painting Kit). This durable sheet is designed to cover your floors and furniture, protecting them from paint splashes, spills, and dust. Position it neatly over carpets, wooden floors, sofas, or tables - anywhere you want to keep clean.

Next, take some painters tape and use it to mask off edges, skirting boards, light switches, sockets, and ceiling lines. This step ensures a sharp, professional-looking finish and prevents paint bleed. Press the tape down firmly and remove it carefully once the paint is touch-dry to avoid peeling.

Step 2: Prepare Your Paint

Good paint prep is key. Even if the paint looks fine, give it a thorough mix using the Bamboo Paint Stirrer provided in all Hemway kits. Stirring redistributes pigments and ensures a smooth, even application. Use a figure-of-eight motion for the best results and stir for at least a couple of minutes.

Step 3: The Tools of the Trade – Rollers, Brush, and Tray

Now it’s time to get painting!

Pour a small amount of paint into your Biodegradable Paint Tray. These trays are not only practical but eco-friendly too, made with sustainability in mind.

Choose the right roller: Hemway offers two roller sizes for different parts of your wall:

  • 9” Paint Roller & Sleeves (included in the Premium Bamboo Painting Kit and the Paint Roller Kit): Ideal for large, flat surfaces like feature walls or entire rooms. The mid-pile sleeves hold just the right amount of paint for smooth, even coverage without splattering.
  • 4” Paint Roller & Sleeves (in the Bamboo Premium Paint Roller Set): Perfect for narrower spaces, tight corners, behind radiators, or above door frames. The smaller roller gives you greater precision and manoeuvrability.
Adding paint to tray

Load your roller by dipping it in the tray and rolling it back and forth across the ridged section to remove excess paint. Then, apply to the wall in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ shape and fill in the gaps for an even finish.

Use the 1.5” Cutting In Brush, included in the Hemway Premium Bamboo Painting Kit, to tackle the tricky bits - along ceilings, corners, and skirting boards. This brush allows for clean, controlled lines and is a must for a polished finish.

Step 4: Painting Tips for the Best Finish

  • Work in sections: Start with the edges (‘cutting in’) and then move onto the larger areas with your roller.
  • Maintain a wet edge: To avoid lap marks, always blend freshly painted areas with ones you’ve just completed.
  • Two thin coats are better than one thick coat: Let the first coat dry fully before applying the next.
  • Ventilation is key: Open windows to ensure proper airflow during and after painting.

Step 5: Clean Up and Admire Your Work

Once you’ve finished, remove the painter’s tape while the paint is still slightly tacky. Rinse out the brushes and rollers (our sleeves are reusable!) and fold up the dust sheet for next time.

Take a step back and enjoy the transformation - a room refreshed, brightened, and brought to life with your own hands and the help of Hemway’s thoughtfully designed decorating kits.
